Tulips, Tulips Everywhere!

Every March, around the middle of the month, Descanso Gardens in Southern California comes alive with thousands of tulips. Timing is everything with the tulips. Come too early and you will miss the full effect. Come too late and they will be gone. It took several trips to the gardens this year to get some images that I like. You can find them in the Gallery. Now I need to wait until next year to photograph the tulips during the week-long window. Patience.

I have been fascinated by tulips for decades. While I was a photography student at UC Riverside in the 80’s I found a private garden near Running Springs CA that opened its doors to the public during tulip time. I photographed them in color and Black-n-white over several years. Then a forest fire wiped out the garden and it has not been opened to the public since then. One of the images that I took back in the day hangs in my bathroom.
